People from areas affected by the Asian tsunami will be less stringently policed for immigration breaches, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced January 10.

From January 7 2005, nationals from Sri Lanka and the Maldives under final order of removal will automatically get a stay on deportation of 90 days. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will also consider stays for non-criminal aliens from other countries affected by the disaster.

DHS also says that people granted stays may be given employment authorization to be able to financially support themselves, in cases where this is appropriate and authorized by law.
