Eastern European immigrants: What do you think?
21 September 2005
For concise and recent immigration information watch our news.
A recent report shows that 3 to 5 percent of young, university-educated Eastern Europeans are immigrating to Western Europe. The report says that this is a temporary phenomenon, and that most of them will return to their home countries in a few years. In the near future, they will be replaced by a different group of immigrants.
Do you agree? Are you an Eastern European living and working in Western Europe? Will you return to your home country soon? Where do you think the next wave of immigrants will come from? Do you think that more Western European countries should end their transitional period and allow Eastern European (new EU member state) workers to freely work?
Give us your opinion!

There are hundreds of thousands of jobs vacant in France. What a pity that the government has taken a hardline position and closed the labor market to East Europeans even for jobs requiring the knowledge of their mother tongue. Switzerland, a non EU country, was the first to take the decision to open its labor Market. It is shameful...

"United we stand Divided we fall". Well, the statement does carry a lot of meaning. Europe is at the moment the land of opportunities and Africa and Asia have lots of skilled people not to forget ofcourse that Europe too has its share of very skilled people. Together miracles can be done. I believe that in today's context immigration is basically moving to places where one feels comfortable and can also utilise his skills to the opportunities present there. So immigration can basically be from anywhere to anywhere. Don't we see our share of immigrants from Europe and American in Asia and Africa?

Europe had better know now the untapped real and raw deal is Africa, that's where the world will turn in the next few years for skilled, polished and cheap labour. Nigeria is blessed with graduates in all fields of endeavour, well trained and who can compete anywhere in the world, thousands are churnned out every year with unemployment as high as 65%. Europe - wake up.

Well, I believe that much has to be done in the EU! I do understand fears of Old Members but at this same time this is only temporary situation! I think the countries like UK, Ireland and Sweden benefit a lot from this new immigration! Look at USA, this country benefits economically and socially from immigration a lot! OLD Europe, take a lesson from YOUNG USA! Discrimination and prejudice will not take you anywhere (talking about all of the members of EU!) Lets give the meaning to the word UNION by creating one based on respect of each other, solidarity, not national interests!
