The Green Card Lottery is an annual event in which the United States gives away 50,000 permanent residency visas to applicants from around the world. The lottery was first run in 1995. Its aim is to increase the diversity of the population of the United States by granting residency to natives of countries with low levels of immigration to the US.
If you are from an eligible Country and wish to emigrate to the US you might like to submit an entry to the Green Card Lottery. Applications are accepted from citizens of ALL countries in the world EXCEPT from those from 18 countries that have sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the US over the last five years.
Those countries are
United Kingdom (not Northern Ireland)
If you come from one of the 18 countries listed above but have a spouse from a country that is not on the excluded countries list, or if both of your parents came originally from such a country, you will also be able to apply.
In order to be eligible you must also have been educated to a level equivalent to the completion of High School in the US or have completed two years' work experience in the last five years of a job that requires at least two years training to perform.
If you comply with these conditions, you will be entered into a draw. The selection is made randomly by computer.
