Australian immigration to host job fair in US for skilled workers

The Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) announced that organisers at the Australian job fair in Houston, Texas have reached their US target enrolment for attendees. The Australian Skilled Migrants job fair, taking place this month, was set up for US workers in gas, oil, mining and construction to meet Australian recruiters from about 20 major resources companies, as well as to meet with Australian immigration officers.

"Skilled workers from throughout Texas and adjoining southern states have sent us their details and those who 'have the goods' have received an email from the department with an invitation to attend the job fair. We've had to cut off online expressions of interest as it approached 3000 because we are limiting each session to ensure each applicant and all of the recruiters have quality time with each other,"DIAC spokesman Sandi Logan said.

"There will be a brief summary from Immigration officials about visa requirements at the opening of each session, and then we'll invite the participants to visit the booths of the business and state government representatives. We're looking for engineers, quantity surveyors, welders, electricians, carpenters and mechanics among a range of trades and professions," Logan added.

"There will be trades recognition officials also attending who will help American journeymen and women begin the process of having their qualifications and certification recognised to enable them to hit the ground running when they arrive … so they're essentially job ready. We're confident Americans who are looking for a career step-up, are looking for a challenge, and who are ready to travel will find many similar qualities and elements in the Australian lifestyle that they'd be used to at home in the US," Logan said.

From 1 July 2012, under Australia's Skill Select program, Australian skilled immigration applicants will have to submit an expression of interest before submitting their application. This is likely to mean fewer people qualifying for skilled immigration and a longer processing time.
