The Minister for Immigration and Citizenship of Australia, Kevin Andrews, has announced an "Australia Needs Skills" expo to be held in Brisbane on 14 April 2007. The aim is to help working holiday makers and other temporary residents in Queensland with relevant skills stay in Australia on a permanent basis.

On 01 September 2007, Australia will introduce major changes to their General Skilled Migration (GSM) program, a points-based system designed to bring in skilled foreign workers. Some of the key changes include tightening requirements in English language proficiency, increased emphasis on skilled work experience, and simplifying the GSM visa structure. A new temporary work visa will be introduced for graduates as well.

Skilled migrants that come to New Zealand under the Work to Residency program will have more time to find employment, according to Immigration Minister David Cunliffe.

New Zealand and Australia are becoming increasingly popular as destinations for migrant workers. Australia, the 6th largest country in the world, is highly favorable to migrants because of its rich and varied geography, low unemployment, and low population density. New Zealand has much of the same to offer; it's especially known for its pristine landscapes and wildlife, as well as a relatively low-crime society.

The Information Technology Contract and Recruitment Association (ITCRA) is calling on the Australian government to more aggressively investigate and sanction employers and businesses who are abusing immigrant workers via the 457 visa scheme.
