Immigration news

Many of the headlines in recent weeks have been dominated by opposition by many in the Republican Party to President Barack Obama's immigration reforms which are mainly aimed at helping the millions of undocumented Hispanic migrants in the US. Obama's reforms should mean that these migrants will more easily be able to integrate into US society.

A new pilot visa programme has been launched this month to make it easier for business and tourist visitors from India to apply for a visa by allowing them to apply online for a visa to travel to Australia.

Andrew Robb, Trade and Investment Minister said: 'India is one of the world's fastest growing outbound travel markets. This trial will make it easier for Indian visitors to apply for visas to travel to Australia'

The UK government have announced a crackdown on bogus Tier-2 visa sponsorships, which may lead to up to 2,500 migrants having to leave the Country.

An investigation by immigration officials has revealed that in some cases migrants are being given Tier-2 visas for jobs that don't exist, or are completely different from those advertised.

The former UK Chief Inspector for borders and immigration, John Vine, has criticised the current government policy on UK immigration.

This is the first time Mr Vine has spoken publicly since quitting his post at the end of last year. He said that the UK are still not getting the basics right on the issue of immigration, and that there are still problems with the way in which existing rules and regulations are enforced.

He said: 'There is still much more room for improvement in getting the basics right; ensuring that staff know their powers under the law.

An independent liberal Conservative think tank has told the UK Prime Minister, David Cameron, that most Tories are actually in favour of immigration.

'Bright Blue' have published a report warning that the government's aggressive immigration policy may actually be damaging to the Conservative Party in years to come. They suggest that there are many ethnic minority Tories who 'will be an important part of the Conservative Party's support base in the years ahead.' If the government continue to pursue the current hard-line policy on immigration then they risk alienating these crucial voters.

The US have announced that eleven countries will be added to the list of those eligible to participate in the H-2A and H-2B visa programs in 2015.

Employers can apply for H-2A (Agricultural) and H-2B (Non-Agricultural) visas to employ foreign workers for seasonal or temporary work within the US. The H-2A visa covers agricultural work such as fruit-picking, while the H-2B visa is for the non-agricultural sector, and is typically used for a wide range of lower skilled work.
