Immigrants made up 10% of the population in member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in 2010, according to a new report. The OECD is a group of 34 countries, mainly in western Europe and North America which includes the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
The percentage of immigrants rose by a quarter between 2000 and 2010. The proportion of immigrants who are graduates settling in countries such as the UK, Canada, Australia and Germany has risen. And there is now an average 65% employment rate among immigrants in OECD countries.
We would like to draw your attention to the EU Blue Card Network, a new web facility that could help you get a European Union Blue Card. The Blue Card is the EU's equivalent of the United States 'green card'. It allows non-EU nationals to live and work in the EU.
To apply, you need:
- A higher education qualification
- And an EU work contract.
The card entitles you to work anywhere in the EU apart from Denmark, Ireland and the UK. If you don't already have an EU job, then you can register with the Blue Card Network website and upload a CV. Then, EU recruiters can browse the database and may invite you to an interview. If you get a job offer you can apply for your EU Blue Card.
The US could create 8.8m new jobs by issuing 100,000 green cards to graduates according to Peter Cohan, a management consultant, author and lecturer.
Mr Cohan cites research from the Kaufman Foundation which says that 25.3% of technology and engineering start-ups between 1995 and 2005 had at least one immigrant as a founder. These companies had sales of US$52bn and employed 450,000 workers in 2005.
Mr Cohan recommends the passing of the Startup Visa Act to help the US economy to create more jobs. This act would allow immigrants who could raise US$250,000 investment in a startup company to apply for US visas.
A leaked report prepared for the Canadian government recommends a rise in immigration levels of 6% annually between 2014 and 2018. This would take the annual immigration target from about 253,000 at present to 337,000 in 2018.
The report recommends that the Federal Skilled Worker Program should continue at its current level. The FSWP is Canada’s main skilled migration program. Applicants are measured against a 'points grid' and must score adequate points to be considered. Points are awarded for various factors such as qualifications, experience, ability in English and French and age. The system is currently closed to new applicants but is expected to re-open in January 2013.
