Eligible Science and Courses

The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) has created a list of eligible Science and Engineering courses. Only those who have studied approved courses are eligible to stay under the scheme, unless they have commenced study for a Master's or PhD on or after 01 May 2006. The subjects highlighted as being in decline are

  • mathematics
  • engineering
  • physical sciences

and courses have been labeled as eligible due to those subjects identified.

The eligible Subjects at each Level of Study for the Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme are defined in the Joint Academic Coding System (JACS).

Any subject with a JACS code having the same letter and first digit as a Principal Subject falls within that Principal Subject. For example the Principal Subject H100 General Engineering includes H121 Fire Safety Engineering.

Your course tutor will be able to identify approved programmes and subjects. Approved courses can be identified by their Higher Education Statistics Agency Code or JACS Code. Ask for the JACS code that will be returned, or has been returned, to the Higher Education Statistics Agency as the 'Subject of qualification aim' for your programme at the point of completion. Then check whether you are eligible by looking that code up in the list of eligible subjects.

You can only qualify for the Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme if you are studying on a Eligible programme such as a:

  • first degree programme
  • taught and research postgraduate programmes.
There are two lists of approved courses depending on the time frame that an applicant's results were recieved.
