1. Who needs to apply under the Worker Registration Scheme?

Whether you are a Hungarian accountant, a Polish farm worker, or a Latvian bartender wanting to work in the UK, you would need to apply for a registration card and certificate under the Worker Registration Scheme once you find an employer in the UK. Whether on a short-term or long-term contract or assignment, if you started a new job in the UK after 1 May 2004 you would need to apply for this registration card and certificate.

2. What if I've been working 'under the table' in the UK for an employer without any legal status?

You would also need to apply for a registration card and certificate under the Worker Registration Scheme. Your status will then be considered legal in the UK and your employer will no longer be at risk of getting into trouble.

3. What if I want to be self-employed in the UK?

You would not need to apply for a registration card and certificate in this case. On arrival in the UK, however, you would need to register Inland Revenue immediately. There is a penalty of £100 for late registration.

4. Why should I bother registering?

You should register as soon as you start a job, which will allow you to begin working towards 12 months' of uninterrupted employment. At the end of the 12 months you will get full rights of free movement throughout the EU. If you have not registered within one month of beginning work, your employer will not be authorised to employ you any longer.

5. Can I work at more than one job at the same time?
